DEUS EX MACHINA – Dlanor A. Knox Image Song

Title: DEUS EX MACHINA [デウス・エクス・マキナ]
Lyricist: kazuchi [かずち]
Vocalist: iojjj
Composer: kazuchi [かずち]
Album: Teardrop Theater
Circle: Esper Academy [えすぱー学園] (AKA Espaagakuen, Esper Gakuen)

Please read through this, even if you’ve seen my video. I’ve caught several huge mistakes, and one line had wrong kanji for it…

An asterisk (*) means that there is a translation note for that word/line etc. Scroll down until you find that section.

Translation:

The ceremony reduces everything to binary code,
completely untying the twining LOGIC.
It is impossible for a miracle to deviate from this discussion point,
and even the criminal that clings to it should be, in any case, cut DOWN.

A dull light runs through
*Rue Morgue’s darkest darkness.
Magic, descriptions, sorcery. The mystery is still
endlessly continuing to be made.

A presumptuous eternal dance party ticks time away
in an eternally cool-headed concert until the gears stop.
The sublime, glimmering longsword slices everything apart,
eliminating the future
to create ORDER.

With rapid progress, everything weathers away to mystery
and the wailing <Lonely Heart> means NOTHING.
It was impossible for a blind spot to forestall my senses;
before they could even breathe, they were at a loss of what to DO.

My body melts, permeating through
the deeply hieroglyphed mystery.
Just like in *Dogura Magura, the mystery is still
in an endless corridor, wandering.

In a concert of cold-blooded glory, I found happiness,
but this blissfully elaborate thinking machine is unable to engage her gears.
Blinking, everything in my view is completely ruined,
but disillusioning the future
will not be ENOUGH.

Even the *Yellow Room
and the *Orient Express
become courts of judgement.

A presumptuous eternal dance party ticks time away
in an eternally cool-headed concert until the gears stop.
The sublime, glimmering longsword slices everything apart,
eliminating the future
to create ORDER.

Translation Notes:

  • First up, the syntax in this song is really…poetic. The (Japanese) lyrics actually rhyme much like they would in an English song, but in order to do this, they messed with the word order and used phrases like poems do (Not quite inverted syntax, but similar…). In short, Japanese and English have very different structures, so I can’t get the Japanese and the English translation to line up perfectly without sounding like Yoda. I’ll just try to make it as clear as possible.
  • “Rue Morgue’s darkest darkness” is a reference to Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Murders in the Rue Morgue, probably the first and one of the most famous closed room mysteries. Poe is called the “father of the modern mystery,” and is considered one of the first writers to switch from simply describing horrible events to a “study of the criminal’s mind.”

  • Dogura Magura is a Japanese mystery by Yumeno Kyuusaku. It has no english translation, so I don’t really know what it is about, but here’s a short description (halfway down page):
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yumeno_Ky%C5%ABsaku
  • “the yellow room” is a reference to The Mystery of the Yellow Room by Gaston Leroux, which is considered the quintessential closed room mystery by many.
  • the Orient Express is an obvious reference to Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express

Original Kanji: Found here:

    • Sure, and thanks! Just give me credit for the English translation. I’ve been messing around with this for almost a year, so hopefully this should be pretty accurate by now. I hope. Well, I feel really good about it… ^_^;
